Sometime late in autumn, on a Thursday evening, a terrible storm arose outside. In the impenetrable darkness, the rain poured in torrents, and the wind howled and howled so much that even the rafters on the roof cracked in their old hut. The father and mother and all the children were sitting in a circle by the open fire, and everyone was doing something. When they heard it, someone knocked three times on the window from outside. The peasant came out of the house to see what kind of guest had come to them in such bad weather. He opened the door, and in front of him stood a giant polar bear. A peasant saw him and was completely frightened. "Good evening," greeted the bear. - Good evening, - answered the peasant. - I came to ask if you would give me your youngest daughter. And for this you will become as rich as you are now poor, - said the polar bear. The peasant heard this and really wanted to get rich. But he answered the bear: - I will ask my daughter, as she wishes, so it will be. He returned to the house and said: - There is a huge polar bear outside and asks to give him our youngest daughter, and in return promises to make us as rich as we are now poor. The daughter heard what they wanted from her, and insisted: - No, I will not go with him under any circumstances. The peasant went outside and agreed with the bear that he would try to please his daughter. - Come, - he says - for an answer in a week, on the evening of the second Thursday, maybe something will work out. And everyone began to persuade the girl. Father and mother, sisters and brothers said every day how rich they could become and how she herself would be fine. And finally they persuaded. A girl came to get ready for the road. She washed herself, combed her braids, washed and mended her old clothes and tied in a little knot what she wanted to take with her. On the second Thursday evening, the polar bear came to them again, as he had agreed with the peasant. The girl took her little horn, humbly sat on his back and drove off.
