To what extent would a society work in which rewards were “from each according to his ability to each according to his need”? Justice and equality, exploitation and encouragement of carelessness and the least possible effort, or something in between these two scenarios? This is just one of the contexts for which the book “Atlas Shrugged”, by Ayn Rand, proposes reflection. Creator of the philosophy known as Objectivism, the Russian author questions a society that, with good intentions, acts generating more harm than any benefit to the collective – or would it be to the individual? What is the difference, after all? Set in a time when few regions of the world have not yet had their economies devastated by collectivist and interventionist ideals, the book shows how self-interest disguised as the search for the common good can culminate in a Revolt. So, what parallels can we draw with what we are experiencing today? Is it possible to reach the same extreme as the book's plot? What is concrete and what permeates only the imaginary? To answer these and other questions, we invited Breno Perrucho and Dennys Xavier for episode 137 of the Os Sócios podcast. We talk about Ayn Rand and her philosophical influences, what objectivism is, nuances of rationality and faith, realistic and romanticized points of the narrative, and much more. It is already available on audio platforms and will be broadcast on video this Thursday (15/06), at 12 pm, on the Os Sócios Podcast channel.
