The oldest monument in Paris - it dates back to the thirteenth century BC - the Obelisk of the Concorde was offered to France in 1830. An incalculable amount of energy, ingenuity and audacity must have been necessary to go and take this monolith of two hundred and twenty tons from Luxor, make it go down the Nile, cross two seas, go up the Seine, then erect it on the most beautiful square in the capital. This astonishing adventure, marked by all sorts of twists and turns and debates, lasted nearly six years.
