Known throughout the world for being the birthplace of Saint Francis, it is a delightful village perched on a hill, rich in important artistic beauties, historical and spiritual testimonies. We are in Umbria, in the province of Perugia, in the heart of central Italy, together with our friends from Umbria.Love. Assisi stands on the slopes of Mount Subasio, in a dominant position over the wide valley crossed by the Topino and Chiascio rivers. The name of Assisi inevitably recalls that of Saint Francis, its most eminent figure. Francis was born there in 1182, to a wealthy family. The poor man of Assisi stripped himself of all his material possessions, practicing an ascetic existence, and founding the order that later took his name, the Franciscans. After a life spent traveling, dedicated to complete poverty, itinerant preaching, and good works, he died in his native Assisi in 1226. His body was then transferred to the Basilica of San Francesco in 1230. Let's start with the Basilica, a true symbol of the city, a monumental and imposing structure built on the Colle dell'Inferno. One of its peculiarities lies in the presence of two superimposed Basilicas, flanked by a Romanesque bell tower from the 13th century, and by the Sacred Convent. The gabled façade of the Upper Basilica is in French Gothic style, decorated with a large, meticulously crafted rose window, some small statues of the Evangelists, and a majestic splayed portal. The interior of the Upper Basilica is characterized by pointed arches, ogival cross vaults along the nave, and a riot of light blue frescoes by Giotto and his students, dating back to the late 13th century. The 28 scenes describe the life of the Saint and the Franciscan order. But not only: frescoes by Cimabue, numerous stained glass windows by the great German and French masters of the 13th century, the Gothic-Renaissance wooden choir, a 13th-century marble stoup, the Mascioni opus pipe organ. We go down into the Lower Basilica, where a single nave is divided into five bays and side chapels. Here too Giotto, Cimabue and Lorenzetti. We go down further, towards a more intimate and humble place. A soft light illuminates the Crypt and a votive lamp, with oil donated by every region of Italy, illuminates the small circular room. The latter houses the body of Saint Francis and the blessed friars Leone, Rufino, Masseo and Angelo. We exit onto the Lower Piazza di San Francesco, where the Loggia delle Benedizioni welcomes us, and we begin the visit of the historic center. We go up Corso San Francesco, immersing ourselves in a succession of fascinating and picturesque views, surrounded by important historical testimonies, buildings, museums and churches. Among the many wonders that we have admired during our many visits, in this video we will focus only on those that have left a more indelible impression. We pass in front of the Pinacoteca Comunale which houses a Maestà attributed to Giotto. Shortly after, the small but delightful Oratory of the pilgrims. We arrive at the Piazza del Comune, where the fourteenth-century Torre del Popolo, the thirteenth-century Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo, the Palazzo dei Priori, the Fountain with the three lions, and the Church of Santa Maria Sopra Minerva, which immediately captures our attention, overlook. It was built inside an old Roman temple. The impressive facade, raised by considerable steps, shows the ancient fluted columns with Corinthian capitals. The single nave, marked by Corinthian columns, is characterised by baroque stuccos, frescoes executed in the 18th century by Francesco Appiani, two altars, wooden statues of Saints Peter and Paul, the choir loft and the choir stalls. continue on https://amarche.it/italia/umbria/assisi/ index: 00:00 introduction 00:32 where is Assisi 00:56 San Francesco 01:44 Basilica of San Francesco 04:28 Loggia delle Benedizioni 04:58 Pinacoteca 05:13 Oratorio dei Pellegrini 05:28 Piazza del Comune 05:55 Church of Santa Maria Sopra Minerva 06:42 Basilica of Santa Chiara 08:13 Cathedral of San Ruffino 09:52 Rocca Maggiore 10:42 Alleys and views 11:00 Bosco di San Francesco 12:10 Terzo Paradiso 12:44 Basilica Santa Maria degli Angeli in Porziuncola 13:35 Eremo delle Carceri 14:42 Monte Subasio 15:37 Food and wine and typical products 16:32 Conclusions #assisi #sanfrancesco #umbria #travel #italy #sanfrancescodassisi
