After the fall of ruler Assad in Syria, it is unclear how the new situation will affect Russia's strategy on the ground. Putin had supported the Assad regime militarily until recently. However, Russian forces did not oppose the rebel uprising. Now Russia has to fear for its military bases in Syria. Satellite images show that Russian warships have left the military base in Syria. One reason could be that Russia wants to concentrate its forces in Ukraine. In Ukraine, Russian troops have advanced further towards the strategically important city of Pokrovsk. The city in eastern Ukraine is an important logistics center for the Ukrainian military. A Russian capture would bring Putin closer to his goal of conquering the entire Donetsk region.
