For many people, it is the number one annoyance: being stuck in a traffic jam. The road inspectors of Rijkswaterstaat try to get the traffic moving again as quickly as possible. 'Conductor of the road', is what road inspector René Willemse calls himself. "I keep an overview and communicate with the traffic control center, recovery companies and emergency services." The road inspector focuses on breakdowns and accidents, but also on, for example, truck drivers who are on the hard shoulder or objects on the road or damage to the asphalt. "No two days are the same," says Willemse. René uses his Twitter account to keep his followers informed about what he does during his work. For example, we occasionally see special situations such as chickens or sheep on the road. In recent years, he has mainly noticed that the roads are busier and that motorists have a shorter fuse. “And we also see that in the number of cases where a red cross above the road is ignored.”BOAsSoon René, together with many of his colleagues, will also be trained as a Special Investigation Officer (BOA). He will then be allowed to fine people who are in violation. “It is a shame that it is necessary. But those crosses are there so that we can do our work safely.”René has also developed a thick skin by now. “People sometimes find it necessary to shout ugly things at you. And that while we are really trying to help. But I can let that slide.”ServiceableYet Willemse thinks it is a wonderful profession. “It is nice to be of service and to help people. They are sometimes tense, in panic, in danger and I make it as safe as possible for them.”
