Jijoca de Jericoacoara is the northernmost municipality in the state of Ceará, whose main natural attraction is Jericoacoara Beach. Where is Jijoca de Jericoacoara? Jijoca de Jericoacoara is located in the state of Ceará. It is 23km from Jericoacoara, 87km from Camocim, 176km from Itapipoca, 227km from Parnaíba and 305km from Fortaleza. What does the name “Jijoca de Jericoacoara” mean? The word Jijoca has indigenous origins, coming from the combination of the names of the Indians Ji and Joca, who were chiefs of a tribe in that region. Many people believe that the word Jericoacoara means “alligator basking in the sun”. Fishermen still say that Pedra Furada, when seen from the sea, looks like an alligator's eye. Tourism in Jijoca de Jericoacoara, the municipality's main source of income, is fueled by several factors: the natural beauty, the wild and picturesque aspect of a place little touched by technology, as well as the favorable conditions for windsurfing, sandboarding and kitesurfing. Jijoca Lagoon Formed by the damming of the waters of the Paraguai and Mourão Streams, which occurs due to the migration of mobile dunes in the coastal plain, it is a source of income for many residents and a well-visited natural attraction. In August 2000, the Lagoa da Jijoca Environmental Protection Area (APA) was created by the State Government, with the body responsible for managing the area being SEMA and the supervisory body for the area being SEMACE.
