After the German capitulation, Wehrmacht lieutenant Arnold Kirchner set off for the Vogtland region of Saxony - an area that had not been occupied by either the US Army or the Soviet forces for weeks. Just like him, thousands of other soldiers there hoped to be taken in as prisoners of war by the Americans. Kirchner's job at this time: to lead a column every morning that collected food from the US forces.
