While he was still recovering from a long injury, Wehrmacht Lieutenant Arnold Kirchner was given a tank-hunting command shortly before the end of the war. With this command he experienced the German capitulation on May 8, 1945. It was clear to Kirchner and his soldiers: they did not want to fall into the hands of the Red Army under any circumstances.
