Aristotle understands the soul as the principle of life, which explains why this study combines questions of psychology and physiology. It is a naturalistic conception very different from the spiritualist ones of Platonism and Christianity, without religious connotations and attached to particular sciences. He defines the soul as the vital or animating principle, which underlies all manifest functions, from reproduction to intellectual activity. Therefore, although this treatise does not institute a dualism or separate the soul from the body, it does not desubstantivize the soul either, which remains irreducible both as a power or possibility of life and as an effective vital act. The richness of On the Soul has fueled a multitude of vitalist currents to this day.
