In the field of health and well-being, ankylosing spondylitis emerges as a degenerative disease that deserves attention, especially for its incidence in young adults, mainly males. The disease, characterized by chronic inflammation of the spine, manifests itself with symptoms such as stiffness and pain, mainly at night and upon awakening, which can evolve into severe limitations of movement and posture, if not diagnosed and treated promptly. This disease, if neglected, can lead to serious complications, such as ossification of the joints of the spine, causing a profound impact on the quality of life of patients, including psychological problems such as depression and anxiety. Early diagnosis is essential to effectively counteract the progression of ankylosing spondylitis. Recent studies have highlighted the importance of timely recognition of symptoms, underlining how the disease tends to affect individuals under 45 years of age. Interestingly, despite a higher incidence in the male gender, women are also significantly affected, often with a later diagnosis, which reduces the chances of remission. The advent of new therapies, especially with the introduction of biological drugs since 2004, has marked a turning point in the treatment of ankylosing spondylitis. These drugs, which act on inflammation, have shown remarkable success in slowing the progression of the disease and improving the quality of life of patients. Timely use of these drugs, together with a personalized treatment approach, is crucial to obtain the best results. Finally, a fundamental aspect in the treatment pathway is the support provided by patient associations. These organizations play a key role in informing, training and assisting those affected, contributing not only to the spread of awareness of this disease, but also by offering concrete tools to deal with the disease in everyday life. Collaboration between doctors, patients and associations is therefore essential for an integrated and effective approach to managing ankylosing spondylitis. It is caused by inflammation of the spine and can lead to irreversible damage to the joints and spine if not treated promptly. This condition is more common in young men and can lead to depression, anxiety, and isolation. The pain is predominantly in the lower back and is characterized by nighttime pain that wakes the patient up. If the symptoms persist for more than 15 days, it is advisable to consult a specialist. If left untreated, the joints in the spine will gradually become ossified and the patient will lose the ability to move normally, leading to a completely stiff spine.
