Athens had lost its glory and its empire in the war, and the people had felt helpless. Socrates was the only one to have risen from this conflict, one of the only ones who could help his fellow citizens to recover from this defeat. Socrates walked the streets of Athens barefoot, dressed only in a filthy tunic, he cared absolutely nothing for his appearance or the social conventions of his time. What interested him was reflection. This atypical character would lead a true revolution in thought. Socrates was not interested in how the tangible world worked. His new way of thinking based on reason and logic served him to study his fellow men. The individual became an object of attention and study. In the streets of Athens, Socrates spent his time conversing and arguing with passers-by. He would tirelessly question the presuppositions of his fellow citizens, their conceptions of life, virtue, vice, good and evil. He took a malicious pleasure in questioning the conventions of his time. Athens never regained its imperial power after its defeat by Sparta, but it would never again submit to the reign of demagogy. On the contrary, it became the city of intellectual questioning, a place of study and debate where the disciples of Socrates and then their own students would draw the contours of a world based on reason. Little by little the ideas of these Greek thinkers would spread throughout the ancient world.
