The history of our compatriots' acquaintance with the heritage of Ancient Egypt often begins at the display cases of the Egyptian hall of the State Hermitage. The fate of this collection of antiquities from the banks of the Nile, heterogeneous, but the largest in Russia, is not simple and vividly reflects everything that happened to the Fatherland in the 19th-20th centuries. The premiere lecture by Egyptologist Viktor Solkin will not only delve deeply into the meanings of the art monuments that have been exhibited for many decades in the museum's almost unchanged Egyptian hall, but also the most interesting fates of those outstanding Russian Egyptologists whose efforts preserved and studied the collection. Among them are V.S. Golenishchev, B.A. Turaev, V.V. Struve, M.E. Matie, N.D. Flittner, B.B. Piotrovsky and others. Recognized masterpieces and little-known but interesting monuments will be presented at the lecture in their historical and cultural context, which, like the history of their existence in Russia, sometimes amazes the imagination. The lecture, which will allow you to look at familiar works in a new way and will certainly make you want to visit the Hermitage again, is accompanied by the author's photography from the lecturer's archive.
