Analyzing harmonies is one of the most direct ways to prepare ourselves for creating melodies. Using a pre-existing chord progression and singing something over it is not the same as having a deep understanding of that chord progression, the chord-scale relationship, the modes that operate and which source scale they come from, in order to fully exploit the melodic-harmonic richness. A common practice in jazz is counterfacts. The basic idea is very similar to the current use of chord wheels, with the difference that, in a contrafact, the knowledge of harmony is much deeper, which leads to a much more powerful melodic development, especially in improvisation, where having a perfect understanding of the existing harmony and all its possibilities opens the door to enriching our ability to compose in real time, or as they say, our ability to improvise. Easily recognizing the scale-chord relationship is a basic skill that we must develop as improvisers and as composers, in this way we will avoid getting stuck at the morphological level without delving into the syntactic and semiotic level of the music we create. Analyzing themes that have a rich harmony and building new melodies on their formal structure allows us to develop skills that will be tremendously useful to us.
