About the central role of amino acids for the immune system and their importance in sport and old age (geriatrics) - A lecture by Dr. med. Elke Mantwill, (https://sportaerztezeitung.com/author...) given at thesportgroup academy training course “Nutrition, regenerative and conservative therapy in orthopedics & trauma surgery” on February 18, 2023 in the MEWA Arena in Mainz. To begin with, the speaker describes the concept of the immune system and explains its components (physical barriers, cells, humoral components). In addition to cofactors such as zinc, vitamin C and other vitamins, minerals and trace elements, Dr. Elke Mantwill speaks of amino acids as playing a central role. She describes their functions and influences, especially L-glutamine, L-arginine, L-cysteine, glycine and L-lysine (positive influence in the treatment of herpes simplex). Dr. Elke Mantwill also discusses the supply of amino acids through a protein-rich diet and gives recommendations on the amount to be consumed and food combinations to cover basic needs, as well as for athletes or in the case of infections. She also points out the importance of adequate protein intake in old age. Insufficient protein intake (=protein deficiency) promotes muscle loss, weakens the immune system and makes regeneration more difficult, etc. In contrast, the consequences of excessive protein consumption are also shown using a case study.
