American football is one of the absolute top sports in the USA! Millions of viewers sit in front of the television and in the stadiums every weekend. But the American football hype has now reached Germany too! Why is that? Why have more and more people been watching American football in recent years? What is so great about it? Sebastian is trying to find out exactly that. He trains with the American football pros of the Allgäu Comets, attends a GFL game and meets American football cult presenter Christoph "Icke" Dommisch. American football - most people fail to understand the rules. The American football rules are actually relatively complicated and extensive. But that does not stop the hype about American football. American football in Germany is on the rise. But how come American football is suddenly booming? One person who knows the answer is Christoph "Icke" Dommisch. The sports journalist and "ran Football" presenter knows American football better than almost anyone else in Germany. Sebastian met him and spoke to him in detail about the fascination of American football. AMERICAN FOOTBALL UP CLOSE Sebastian also visited a real American football team for his research - the "Allgäu Comets"! The team plays in the 1st Bundesliga, the German Football League or German American Football (really?) League! Sebastian looks closely over Johannes' shoulder. Johannes has been playing American football for around seven years. He shows Sebastian what is important in American football and what he has to pay attention to so that he doesn't get injured. And of course Sebastian also accompanied Johannes to a Bundesliga game. Johannes really put in the effort against the Stuttgart Scorpions - and unfortunately ended up injured. RULES OF AMERICAN FOOTBALL The aim of American football is to get the football into the opponent's end zone, for example with a touchdown. In American football there are always two teams on the field, each with eleven players. A so-called touchdown can be scored by throwing, passing (difference between throwing and passing?) and running. The "offense" (attacking team) of a team has four attempts to gain ten yards or more. If they manage to do this, they get four more attempts; if they don't, the right to attack goes to the other team. The team that has scored the most points at the end wins. If the game is tied at the end of regular time, there is an "overtime" in American football. The GFL - the German Football League - is played in quarters. A quarter lasts 12 minutes!
