Picture this: one fine morning you wake up a multimillionaire. What will you do? Buy a yacht or a garage full of sports cars? Perhaps a diamond tiara and a cruise around the world? All of these would tempt anyone but Hetty Green, who was considered the richest woman in America and yet wore the same black dress for years. Why did she become so frugal? And why did people call her the "Witch of Wall Street"? We present her story, full of eccentricities. Getty invested $1,000 of her $1,200 allowance at age 16 to break into New York society. Getty helped run the family business and became increasingly financially educated. In 1865, Mr. Robinson died, leaving his daughter $1 million in inheritance and $4 million in a trust fund. Five years after her aunt's death, Getty received about half a million dollars, which she invested in "greenbacks" - bonds issued by the government. The richest woman in America haggled with store owners for every penny. In the cold season, she did not buy winter clothes, but put layers of newspapers under her coat to keep warm. She refused to pay bills for doctors and lawyers. Getty was convinced that finances and family are completely different things. Her husband went bankrupt, she refused to help him, and the couple broke up. Getty and her daughter were constantly moving, because Getty was still afraid that she was being followed, trying to poison her. And although the millionaire herself often ate oatmeal and eggs, she always fed her dog steaks. After Edward's death in 1902, she vowed to wear only black for the rest of her life. Some believe that the reason is practicality: black gets dirty much less than other colors.
