Synonymous with entrepreneurship, empowerment and courage, Sarah Breedlove, better known as Madam CJ Walker, was one of the greatest entrepreneurs in history and made her mark in the record books as the first American woman to create a millionaire fortune from scratch. Sarah Breedlove was born on December 23, 1867 in Delta, Louisiana, USA. At the time, the USA was undergoing a major transformation after the end of the American Civil War, which led to the abolition of slavery. In 2016, the company Sundial Brands rescued a bit of Sarah's story and launched a line of products called Madam CJ Walker Beauty Culture, in honor of the entrepreneur. The products are still sold exclusively by the French retailer Sephora. In 2020, the story of Madam CJ Walker was transformed by Netflix into a 4-episode series, where the entrepreneur is played by Oscar-winning actress Octavia Spencer. The series has a number of creative liberties, but is based on the entrepreneur's biography and provides an artistic portrait of Sarah's trajectory.
