He spent his childhood in poverty, helping his father in his work, but always following the pious example of his mother (who later became a nun with the name Theophano). At the age of 14 he began to yearn for monasticism, but did not receive a spiritual blessing to go to Mount Athos until he was 19 years old. Upon his arrival at Mount Athos, on September 26, 1947, he went directly to the elder Joseph (Hesychast), in the cave of the Holy Forerunner, who accepted him into his brotherhood, and he was ordained 9 months later in 1948 under the name Ephraim . In obedience to his elder, the monk Ephraim was ordained a deacon and then a priest. Life in the elder Joseph's brotherhood was very strict and ascetic. After elder Joseph fell asleep in 1959, several monks gathered around elder Ephraim who had him as their spiritual father. In 1973 his fraternity moved to the Holy Monastery of Philotheu where he became its abbot. Because of elder Ephraim's fame, the monastic brotherhood grew rapidly. He was asked by the stewardship of Mount Athos to revive and man many monasteries on Mount Athos which were suffering from poverty, such as Xiropotamos, Konstamonitos and Caracallas. These monasteries are under his spiritual guidance to this day. There are also many other monasteries in Greece under the spiritual guidance of the elder Ephraim, such as the Holy Monastery of Agios Ioannis Prodromos in Serres, of Panagia Odegetria in Portaria (Volos) and that of Michael the Archangel, a former shareholder of Philotheou, on the island of Get over it. In 1979 he arrived in Canada for health reasons. Fr. Ephraim, as soon as he arrived in Canada and began the medical examinations, at the same time began to confess, admonish and teach the expatriate Greeks. His pastoral activity, following invitations, from Canada spread to the USA. Since then the visits continued and his pastoral offer kept increasing. Then, slowly, the idea of establishing a monastery in America began to be cultivated, so that the expatriate Hellenism would have a permanent basis of spiritual supply. Indeed, actions began and two monasteries were founded at first, one in Montreal, Canada, and the other in Pittsburgh, USA. It continued with the founding of other monasteries, with the result that today there are more than 20 monasteries in America. He continued to be the spiritual father of holy monasteries on Mount Athos and 8 nunneries throughout Greece, but as it was not practical to be abbot of the Holy Monastery of Philotheus, as he was away for long periods of time in North America, he resigned in 1990. He has also built a nursing home. The blessed Elder Ephraim fell asleep in the Lord on December 8, 2019 in the Monastery of St. Anthony, Arizona, full of days, after a struggle with the disease in recent years. All the previous day he was lucid where he communicated the holy mysteries. The next day in the morning, the nurses found, at 09.00 in the morning, the old man in an almost upright position, having given up his spirit. The exodus ceremony took place on December 11, 2020 in the Monastery of Saint Anthony of Arizona, in the presence of a large number of people from all over the Orthodox world. #εφραιμ #αριζονασ #ευχη #αθανασιος #λεμεσου #λεμεσουαθανασιος #πνευματικεσομιλιεσ #αγιοιγεροντες
