The Legal Amazon is home to around 1,300 clandestine runways that are not registered with the National Aviation Agency. This is more than the total number of regularized runways in the region. Clandestine runways do not have air traffic control or control over which cargo is loaded onto the plane. Criminal activities, such as logging, drug trafficking and, especially, gold mining, take advantage of this. The far-right government of Jair Bolsonaro supports mining, even though it invades indigenous lands and protected areas. This has resulted in a new gold rush, with the appreciation of one of the main cogs in the mining industry: the pilot. This documentary is part of the report THE RUNWAYS OF DESTRUCTION, produced in partnership with the Pulitzer Center and The New York Times, which identified 362 clandestine airstrips near areas devastated by mining in the Amazon.
