◼︎ In 2009, the National Museum of Korea announced the results of the decipherment of the inscription found in the Seokgatap. It stated that the pagoda at Bulguksa Temple was repaired twice, in 1024 and 1038. This document also included the fact that when the pagoda was on the verge of collapse in 1038, the monks of Bulguksa Temple rolled up their sleeves and even received small donations to repair the pagoda. This directly contradicted the theory that the Seokgatap was a perfect pagoda that had never been repaired since it was built in the 8th century. It was the moment when the myth of the 1,200-year-old 'masterpiece pagoda' collapsed. So what was the reason for the pagoda's near-collapse? The ancient document "Inscription" that contained all of this information and was sleeping inside the pagoda stated that the reason was the earth's movement, or earthquake. #KoreanHistory #History #HistorySpecial #HistoryJournal Copyright ⓒ KBS.
