Kenneth, Marcus's doctor, suggests that he go to a quiet place away from the hustle and bustle of the city to spend his recovery period. He suggests the village of "Limestock" to his patient. Marcus rents a house from Emily Barton and moves to this village with his sister Julia. The village doctor "Dr. Graham", who is an acquaintance of Dr. Kent, comes to see Marcus and after examining him, he realizes that Marcus and his sister have received a threatening letter. The text of their letter states that Julia and Marcus are not siblings. Julia and Marcus are both surprised by this letter and find it funny. Dr. Graham feels satisfied that Julia and Marcus have not responded to the letter, and says that he himself received a threatening letter accusing him of failing to fulfill his medical duties to his patients. Julia takes her brother for a trip to the village and goes to the store herself. Marcus meets a young girl named "Melanie Hunter" while walking. He discovers that Melanie lives with her mother and her mother's half-brother Gerald Simmons, a lawyer, and Gerald's two sons. Also, Marcus meets Joanna, Dr. Graham's sister, and Julia informs Marcus that they have been invited to a party at Gerald Simmons and his sister Maggie's house. On the day of the party, the guests notice that Maggie is reading a letter, and reading the letter makes her sick. Gerald takes his sister to his room with Dr. Graham to rest there. That night, Maggie is poisoned with cyanide pills and finally killed. Melanie comes to see Marcus and says that his mother died the night of the party and he blames himself for her mother's death. On the other hand, "Inspector Graves", to investigate Maggie's death, comes to the Simmons' house and finds out that the babysitter "Eliza Holland" is too worried about Gerald's distress. The inspector considers Maggie's death to be the result of eating cyanide pills and basically introduces the cause of death as the same anonymous letter. He decides to ask questions to all the guests to clarify the matter. He starts investigating Dr. Graham and Joanna and finds out that Joanna also had a threatening letter but tore it up. Meanwhile, another letter reaches Marcus and Julia, and before Julia throws the letter in the fire, Marcus picks it up and takes it to the police station and Inspector Graves. The inspector trusts Marcos with this and since he is new to the village, he gives him brief information about the threatening letters. Marcus realizes that the letters are clippings from an old book, and the writer of the letters wanted to hide his handwriting. The inspector guesses that the writer of the letters is a woman and asks Marcus to keep an eye on the situation. When Marcus sees that the inspector is suspicious of Maggie's death, he decides to settle with his landlord and return to London. He wants to be in control of himself and overcome his fear to find a solution for this story, and when Mrs. Palmer, the cook, asks him to allow one of her friends named Agnes Wendell to visit her, she allows him; But this never happens and Marcus gets worried about Agnes not coming and calls Gerald Simmons and finds out that Agnes has not returned to her workplace either.
