Cannes International Film Festival 2024: Grand Prix All That Appears to Be Light tells a lyrical tale of women's fates in the ever-vibrant and colorful India. Prabha, in her thirties, works as a nurse in Mumbai. Although she has not spoken to her husband, who works in Germany, for years, doubts hold her back and prevent her from moving forward. Her roommate is the younger Anu, who tries in vain to experience freedom with her lover, but their religious differences make it difficult for their relationship to flourish. Leaving the big city and the hustle and bustle of everyday life behind, they travel to an island with their third female companion, the widow Parvaty, to face their greatest fears: grief, letting go, and acceptance. Director Payal Kapadia's magnificent work, Everything That Seems to Be Light, is the first Indian film in thirty years to debut in the competition program of the Cannes International Film Festival, where it won the Grand Prix.
