Participant of the Great Patriotic War, Cavalier of the Order of the Red Star (1944) and the Orders of Glory of the 2nd and 3rd degrees (1944, 1945). He gained wide fame thanks to his comedy roles in films, the most famous of which was the parasite Fedya from Leonid Gaidai's film Operation Y and Other Shurik's Adventures (1965). Later, Smirnov was "discovered" to the audience as a talented dramatic actor, primarily thanks to his role as mechanic Makarych in Leonid Bykov's film Only Old Men Are Going to Battle (1973).
