At the center of this piece is a young man named Vasile Dan, editor of the Bucharest newspaper Alarma, who seeks fulfillment by overcoming material conditions without abdicating his ideals. The play begins with the end-of-the-year ball scene at Mrs. Raspal's girls' boarding school, the institution where Dan teaches philosophy classes. Dan is invited to the waltz by Ana Raclis, a former student, the spoiled and capricious daughter of an escaped nobleman, who had squandered his estates, indebted to his Peruvian brother-in-law, the consequence being the reduction of Ana's dowry, a fact kept secret for a while. The newspaper's editorial office is headed by Cezar Priboianu, Dan's mentor and friend. In front of him, he talks about his school-related utopias: "I dream of a school, an ideal school, where the boy can live with pleasure, he will love to learn...". Forced to go to Sinaia for a few days, he meets Ana again and meets Albert Lambrino, a shy young man, a relative of hers, who was studying in Vienna. Being invited to take part in an excursion, Dan observes the court he is making, Anei, Drăghici, a good-looking but somewhat unsculpted officer. When confronted with the evaporation of Ana's dowry, the officer backs down. Ana frequents the house of her sick aunt, married to Peruianu, a miserly and tyrannical man. One night, in a moment of "passionate blindness" he silhouetted her. Ana thus arouses the hatred of her aunt and slanderous rumors in the fair, for which she leaves for Paris with her father, with the last resources, to give birth to the child resulting from the rape. Dan finds out what happened and, with the support of the director, is sent to the French capital, where he meets Ana again. The fact that she had a child and was poor did not prevent Dan from marrying her. Back in Bucharest, Dan tries, unsuccessfully, to make a living as a lawyer and continues to write. He publishes the first volume, Literary attempts, which he submits to the Academy, in the hope of obtaining the annual prize of 5000 lei. The prize is won, however, by an author without writing talent, but with a talent for flattering the big ones. Disappointed, Dan retires with Ana to the province. Poverty in a small market proves even more unbearable than in the city. A provincial ball tests Ana's old inclinations towards coquetry and flirting. The young couple's nerves begin to falter. Ana returns to the right path and becomes her husband's support. He, however, lost not only his literary illusions, but also those related to his wife. Falling into despair, Dan begins to have depressive and manic disorders.
