The history of Norman Sicily began with the Norman conquest of the island, which began in 1061 with the landing in Messina at a time when it was dominated by Muslim potentates and governors, and ended with the death of the last member of the Altavilla family of Sicily, Constance, in 1198. In 1130 the Norman domination established a kingdom on the island with Roger II: the crown was then worn by William I, William II and finally by Tancred, chosen by the Normans (supported by the papacy) in opposition to the rights of Henry VI of Swabia. The death of William II, however, left the field to Henry and his wife Constance of Hauteville, daughter of Roger II. In 1194 the crown went to Henry (see History of Swabian Sicily) and, after his death, to his son Frederick II, king of Sicily in 1198 at just four years old.
