Many believe that the Alaskan Malamute is a descendant of wolfdogs that were domesticated by Paleolithic hunters who crossed the Bering Strait bridge and came to North America about four thousand years ago. The breed's name refers to the Inuit tribe, called Mahlemiut, who were indigenous people who inhabited Alaska. Breed characteristics: Coat: rustic hair and woolly undercoat.
