Lecturer: Ágnes Kis-Tóth (ELTE TTK, Department of Atomic Physics) Title: Everything you wanted to know about black holes, but were afraid to ask Date: 2022.01.27. Abstract: Black holes are the most mysterious creatures in the colorful zoo we call the night sky. Everyone has heard of them, but no one has actually seen them. They are the secret background power ????. Let the stars dazzle and distract us while they invisibly and (almost) imperceptibly influence the everyday life of the universe. Some people even doubt their existence, while others are sure that not only do they exist, but they are also responsible for the most spectacular phenomena in the universe. It's time to talk about what we know, what we suspect, and what's still a mystery about them. Let's find out their story, starting with the first stray idea about black holes, through the possibilities emerging in Einstein's theory of general relativity, to practical observations that are already tangible today! Let's line up and scrutinize the entire family tree of this hidden background power: the dreaded micro-sized black holes at CERN, the stellar-mass specimens hiding in our galactic neighborhood, as well as the supermassive beasts at the center of galaxies! (And then we haven't even talked about medium-sized black holes discovered with the help of gravitational waves...) Let's find out what it would be like to meet them face to face! Should we be afraid of them, or can we just let them run riot in the universe? It's time to unmask them! More information: http://atomcsill.elte.hu/NEW/events/m...
