Various films and bulletproof glass promise security for smartphones. They are supposed to protect the display from scratches and cracks. But the differences in quality are huge. Expert Alex Metikaridis shows it in a test. Simple plastic films are cheap, but do not protect against stone chips. Although armored glass is very resistant to scratches from keys, the display will also break in the endurance test with a falling stone. The expert recommends protection made of thermoplastic plastic, or TPU for short. This provides better protection against falling objects. Price around 25 euros. WHICH CASE IS RECOMMENDED FOR YOUR SMARTPHONE? For expert Alex Metikaridis, the most important thing is the material. Silicone cases are the bare minimum in terms of material. Flip cases are popular, but it should be remembered that the flap is usually open when the phone is dropped. Cell phone cases are good as long as the smartphone is in your pocket, but they lack protection when you are using it. TPU is also recommended here. Cell phone cases made of this material are soft enough to absorb blows and hard enough to keep the phone safe in the case. NEW SCAM: JUICE JACKING Charging your smartphone on the go can be a disaster with this criminal scam. Hackers can attach special cables to public USB charging stations. These supposed charging options have their own WiFi and are connected to an attacker's laptop. If a victim uses the other person's USB cable, a hacker can access personal data, send private pictures of the victim, send a message in the victim's name and ask for money using their own bank details. The victim remains initially unaware. Tip: The only protection is to use your own charging cable. SECURITY GAPS IN PUBLIC WiFi Save data volume and chat for a long time on your cell phone - freely accessible WiFi makes it possible. But is it safe? Technology expert Andreas Reinhardt sees no problem with simple applications such as checking the weather or using WhatsApp. However, as soon as passwords are requested, the expert advises caution. VPN AS A SOLUTION Anyone who urgently needs to handle sensitive data in public WiFi can use a VPN connection. Such apps are also available free of charge. The VPN tunnel can slow down the Internet on the device a little, but offers optimal protection against attackers and data security.
