After a brain tumor operation, Darius fought his way back to life and realized his dream: 22,000 KM by bike along the Pan-American Highway! It all started one day after qualifying for the German Rowing Championships: Darius had extreme headaches and could hardly keep his balance. An MRI scan a few days later provided the clear diagnosis: a brain tumor the size of a tennis ball! He was given only a few days to live and an emergency operation became necessary. After an 8-hour operation, Darius finally learned that he had been lucky: the brain tumor could be completely removed! When he woke up from the operation, however, he discovered that the entire left side of his body was paralyzed. He was only 15 years old at the time! Walking had become unthinkable and Darius had to relearn all the basic motor skills, starting with speaking. Within 10 years, he finally fought his way back to life and decided to fulfill a long-held dream: to cycle the Pan-American Highway and touch people along the way with his story! Rebirth: 21,000km by bike from Canada to Tierra del Fuego After intensive preparations, Darius began his tour along the Pan-American Highway in Canada and faced his first challenge upon arrival in Calgary: his bike had disappeared. Once a replacement was found, the adventure really began and the Rocky Mountains, Banff National Park and Lake Moraine beckoned with their gigantic nature! Always on the way south, the USA and Mexico are waiting to be discovered by Darius. In Mexico in particular, he was exposed to some dangerous situations that could have brought the trip to an early end. With a lot of luck, he finally makes it to Guatemala and inspires many people there, but also in Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama and Colombia with his life story. He eventually worked his way through the other countries of South America to Argentina and had so many adventures there that you can experience his stories in depth in three Off-The-Path podcast episodes!
