Why did Pratap have to hide from his own father Maharana Pratap Maharana Pratap Maharana Pratap ---------------------------------------------------- Maharana Pratap was born to Udai Singh II of Mewar and Jayawanta Bai in 1540, the year Udai Singh ascended the throne after defeating Vanveer Singh. His younger brothers were Shakti Singh, Vikram Singh and Jagmal Singh. Pratap also had two half-sisters: Chand Kanwar and Maan Kanwar. His chief wife was Maharani Ajabde Bai Punwar of Bijolia. Their eldest son was Amar Singh I. He belonged to the royal family of Mewar. After the death of Udai Singh in 1572, Queen Dheer Bai Bhatiani wanted her son Jagmal to succeed him but senior courtiers preferred Pratap as their king as the eldest son. The wishes of the chieftains prevailed and Pratap ascended the throne as Maharana Pratap, the 54th ruler of Mewar in the line of Sisodia Rajputs. He was coronated at Gogunda on the auspicious day of Holi. Jagmal vowed to take revenge and went to Ajmer to join Akbar's army, and received the city of Jahazpur as a jagir as a gift in return for his help.
