Adonis - The Flaw in the Heritage of Islam In this video, poet and philosopher Adonis discusses the flaw in the Islamic heritage. Adonis addresses a range of issues, including: Religious centrality in the Islamic heritage is a major cause of injustice and oppression. When religion is the supreme authority, man loses his freedom. The conflict between reason and tradition is a fundamental flaw in the Islamic heritage. Reason is the source of knowledge and freedom, and tradition is the source of stagnation and backwardness. Adonis offers deep critical insights into the Islamic heritage, and poses difficult questions about the future of Islam. -- Adonis, a Lebanese poet, writer, and thinker of Syrian origin, was born in the Syrian village of Qassabin in 1930. Adonis is considered one of the most important pioneers of modernism in Arabic poetry, and his works have revolutionized the form and content of contemporary Arabic poetry. Adonis has received numerous literary awards, most notably the Goethe Prize (2011), the Nassif Nassar Prize (2011), and the Bollinger Prize (2015). He has also been nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature several times. Adonis is considered one of the most important Arab poets of the twentieth century, and he has left a great impact on contemporary Arab poetry. He is also considered one of the most important Arab thinkers who addressed the issues of Islamic heritage and modernity.
