Before being annexed to Brazil, it belonged to Bolivia and Peru. It is located in the North Region, in the Amazon biome, and the predominant climate is humid equatorial. The state is a major exporter of Brazil nuts and timber, in addition to being the main producer of rubber in the country. History of Acre Until the second half of the 19th century, Acre was inhabited by indigenous populations and was still part of the Bolivian and Peruvian territories. From 1877 onwards, motivated by the exploration of latex, the first migrants from the Northeast region of the country arrived in Acre territory. Between 1899 and 1909, disputes over control of the area were fought between Bolivians, Peruvians and the Brazilians who were there. The conflicts with the Bolivians culminated in the Treaty of Petrópolis, in 1903, when Brazil acquired the territory of Acre. The conflict with the Peruvians, in turn, came to an end six years later. On June 15, 1962, Acre was elevated to the status of state. Geography of Acre Acre is located in the North region of Brazil and is part of the Amazon biome. It has a territorial area of 164,123 km², being the 16th largest Brazilian state. The territory of Acre borders the states of Amazonas and a small strip of Rondônia, to the east. It also borders two countries: Peru, in the entire western portion, and Bolivia, in the southeast. The westernmost point of Brazilian territory is located in Acre. It is the Serra da Contamana, which is home to the source of the Moa River. The predominant climate in the state is humid equatorial, marked by high temperatures for most of the year and low thermal amplitude. Maximum temperatures are 32 ºC, and, in winter, minimum temperatures are around 18 ºC. High rainfall levels are another important characteristic of the Acre climate, varying between 1,800 mm and 2,500 mm per year. Acre is located in the area where the Amazon Rainforest occurs, with vegetation cover consisting of open forests, characterized by species of palm trees, bamboo and vines, and dense forest. Another formation found in the state is the Campinarana, composed of medium and small trees. The land where Acre is located is located in the Western Amazon Depression, with its relief marked by the presence of depressions and a small area of plains to the north. The highest elevation in the state is the Serra do Divisor, on the western border, with an altitude of 600 meters. Acre's hydrographic network plays an important role in transportation, being divided between the Purus and Juruá basins. The state's main rivers include: Purus, Juruá, Acre, Macauã, Iaco, Tarauacá, Envira, Gregório, and Muru. Demographics of Acre Acre has a population of 894,470 inhabitants (IBGE, 2020). The state's population density is 4.4 inhabitants/km² and, therefore, it is considered the least populated state in Brazil. Between 2019 and 2020, the state's population growth rate was 1.4%, exceeding the national average. The state's urbanization rate is 72.56% according to the 2010 IBGE Census. Just over 46% of Acre's population lives in the capital, the municipality of Rio Branco. The city of Santa Rosa do Purus, in turn, has the smallest population in the state, with 6,717 inhabitants. The largest portion of Acre's inhabitants are between the ages of 20 and 59. Life expectancy in the state is 74.8 years (IBGE, 2019), the highest in the North Region. Regarding population composition, Acre has many migrants from other regions of Brazil (Northeast and South) and from neighboring countries, such as Bolivia and Peru, as well as Venezuela and Haiti. It is also worth noting that Acre has an indigenous population of 19,962 people. Geographical division of Acre The territory of Acre is composed of 22 municipalities, which are grouped into five microregions and two mesoregions, determined by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). Mesoregion of Vale do Juruá: covers the entire northern and northwestern portion of the state, and is composed of the microregions of Cruzeiro do Sul and Tarauacá. Mesoregion of Vale do Acre: in turn, corresponds to the south and southeast of the state, and is divided between the microregions of Sena Madureira, Rio Branco, where the state capital is located, and Brasileia.
