The municipality of Zaanstad has not paid sufficient attention to the way in which people and technology influence each other when operating the Den Uyl Bridge. This is evident from research by the Dutch Safety Board into an accident in which a 57-year-old woman died last year while opening this bridge. The report 'Den Uyl Bridge Zaandam Accident - More than the Sum of Parts' published today describes how the municipality approached the safe opening and closing of the bridge solely as a technical issue and paid no attention to the human component. Because more and more bridges in the Netherlands are being operated remotely, the Board emphasises that the conclusions from the research are important for bridge managers throughout the Netherlands.
