Acarlar Longozu is the largest single-piece longoz (subasar) forest in Turkey, located between Karasu and Kaynarca districts in the north of Sakarya. It is 250–1250 m wide and 7.5 km long. It is a typical coastal dam lake in terms of its formation. It is bordered by 20–25 m high sand dunes between it and the Black Sea and by low hills with an average height of 100 m in the south. It is located 6 km west of the Sakarya River, its excess waters flow into the Sakarya River with the Okçu stream. In terms of transportation, it is approximately 26 kilometers from Karasu and approximately 50 kilometers from Sakarya. There are 5 villages belonging to Karasu in its vicinity: Denizköy, Karamüezzinler, Üçoluk, Taşlıgeçit, Camitepe, 3 villages belonging to Kaynarca; Turnalı, Büyükyanık, Birlik villages. With its rare flooded forest ecosystem in Turkey, it was taken under protection as a 1st degree Natural Site in 1998 by the decision of Bursa Cultural and Natural Heritage Protection Board. Adapazarı Soil and Water Organization expanded Okçu Creek, which is the flow of the lake, and turned it into a canal in 1971. Since then, the area of the lake has shrunk by 40% (9,443 km2). Some endemic plant and animal species live in the lake. It is a breeding and wintering area for migratory birds in particular. Ash, alder, beech and elm species are common in the forest area. The trade of Lake onion, which is used in the treatment of polio, is carried out by Kaynarca villagers. Longoz is home to catfish, rudd, carp fish, and rabbits, foxes, wild boars, weasels, falcons and squirrels in the surrounding area. Longoz is the only Wildlife Development area in Sakarya. Water violet (Hottonia palustris) is an endemic species in our country and is found only in Lake Acarlar. In addition, some rare species such as the lake tulip (Leucojum aestivum) are also found in Lake Acarlar. Longoz was registered as a Wetland with the plan prepared in 2009 and its planning was made. In the Karasu part of Longoz, arrangements such as walking path, restaurant, boat, pedal boat, picnic and park area are made to make it available for eco-tourism.
