He is the true founder of the Abbasid state, and the builder of Baghdad. He was pledged allegiance to as caliph in the month of Dhu al-Hijjah in the year 136 AH after the death of his brother Abu al-Abbas Abdullah al-Saffah. Al-Saffah was younger than him, but he assumed the caliphate before him in compliance with the will of their brother Ibrahim al-Imam. The reason for this was that al-Saffah’s mother was a free Arab, and al-Mansur’s mother was a Berber slave called Salama. Al-Mansur was born in Al-Humaimah in the land of Al-Shara’a in Al-Balqa, located in the Levant, specifically in southern Jordan, in Safar in the year 95 AH. He grew up there and then traveled to Kufa with his family after Marwan bin Muhammad arrested his brother Ibrahim Al-Imam. He helped his brother Abu Al-Abbas Al-Saffah in controlling the Islamic state and in consolidating the rule of the Abbasids. Al-Saffah appointed him over Armenia, Azerbaijan, and the Euphrates Island. He also sought his help in suppressing the revolutions that arose against them at the beginning of the Abbasid state. Al-Saffah entrusted him with the caliphate after him.
