Miskinli Veli was born in 1894 in a poor family in the village of Boyuk Garabulag (now Miskinli) in the Gadabay region. His father died when Veli was 2 years old. He started working as a hired laborer at the age of nine, and later worked as a shepherd for a while. He began to be an ashug at the age of 19–20. He had no master.
