Abilify, the trade name for the active ingredient Aripiprazole, is a drug with unique properties because, at low doses (from 2 to 5 mg to be clear), it works mainly as a dopaminergic, thus improving mood, energy, initiative, desire to do and sexuality (it can correct sexual disorders caused by antidepressants). At high doses (20-30 mg), however, it is used only for psychosis (schizophrenia and mania). Dopamine receptors exist in two forms: an active one and an inactive one. In depressive forms or obsessive disorders or in certain sexual dysfunctions, there is often a modest dopaminergic deficit that Abilify at low doses corrects. At high doses, however, Abilify works well on mania and schizophrenia where the imbalances of the dopaminergic system are severe. In mania, the matter is simple, Abilify at high doses will be able to turn off the strongly excited dopaminergic receptors. Schizophrenia, on the other hand, is a more complex and chronic disease characterized by excessive limbic dopaminergic activity (responsible for delusions and hallucinations) and a frontal dopaminergic deficit (responsible for boredom, listlessness, apathy, emotional coldness, lack of interest, all typical symptoms of schizophrenia): Abilify at full dosage (from 10 to 30 mg/day) would seem to be the ideal drug for this pathology due to its theoretical (biochemical) ability to bring the imbalances of the aforementioned dopaminergic receptors back to normal, even if in the clinical reality, which is always more complex than the biochemical one, Abilify is not miraculous but simply improves delusions and hallucinations without worsening cognitive deficits, which is already extremely important.
