Katharina von Zimmern (1478–1547), a young woman of high nobility, was elected abbess of the Fraumünster monastery in Zurich at the age of just 18, a position that made her the formal ruler of the city. When Ulrich Zwingli's reformist ideas began to take hold in 1524, she handed the monastery and all its possessions over to the city, thereby risking ostracism from her Catholic family. 2024 will mark the 500th anniversary of the handover of the Fraumünster Abbey, which lies in the heart of Zurich. *** Welcome to the podcast by Petra Hucke and Susanne Popp. We are the hosts of "Frauenleben" and also authors of historical novels - and that is how the idea for this project came about.
