The Abbasid Caliphs were a group of Arab Qurayshi Muslim Caliphs descended from one of the uncles of the Prophet Muhammad ibn Abdullah, namely Abbas ibn Abdul Muttalib. The Caliph in Islam is a Muslim leader of the Islamic state to rule it according to Islamic law. He was called this because the Caliph is their leader and the one who succeeds Muhammad, the Messenger of God, in Islam to assume leadership of the Muslims and the Islamic state. He is also often referred to as the Commander of the Faithful. The Abbasids relied on the Persians to establish their state, who were angry with the Umayyads for excluding them from state positions and major positions, while the Arabs retained them. The Abbasids also attracted the Shiites to help destabilize the entity of the Umayyad state. After the success of their revolution, the Abbasids moved the capital of the state from Damascus to Kufa, then Anbar before they built the city of Baghdad to be their capital, which flourished for three centuries, and became the largest and most beautiful city in the world, and the capital of science and arts, but its star began to wane with the beginning of the sunset of the Abbasid state as a whole. The reasons that led to the collapse of the Abbasid state varied. The Abbasid rule in Baghdad ended in 1258 AD when Hulagu Khan the Tatar looted and burned the city and killed most of its inhabitants, including the Caliph and his sons. The surviving Abbasids moved to Cairo after the destruction of Baghdad, where they re-established the Caliphate in 1261 AD. By this time, the Caliph had become a mere symbol of the religious unity of the Islamic state, while in reality the Mamluk Sultans were the actual rulers of the state.
