As you reach Kotka, you will see towering ramparts along the motorway. They belong to the mighty Kyminlinna, which rose on the northern shore of Hovinsaari in the early 19th century. The fortress guarded the Great Coastal Road, which led across the Finnish coast to St. Petersburg. At the same time, it closed the route from Kymijoki to the interior and secured the rear of the fortress town of Ruotsinsalmi, located on Kotkansaari. The free online Tietoherkku lecture will provide an overview of how Kyminlinna came to be. What did the surroundings of the fortress look like and what stories are associated with the stages of Kyminlinna? The lecture focuses on the earlier stages of the fortress. The topic will be introduced by Maarit Laitala, curator of the Kymenlaakso Museum, and researcher Vilma Lempiäinen. The buildings of the fortress will be reviewed by architectural researcher Viivi Alajuuma.
