Horsens State Prison was inaugurated in 1853 and functioned as a prison until 2006. There have been several famous inmates in Horsens State Prison, for example Peter Adler Alberti, he was incarcerated from 1910 - 1912 for embezzlement and forgery, he had defrauded himself of around 15 million DKK. Which would be equivalent to several hundred million in today's money. After the Second World War, the German plenipotentiary Werner Best was incarcerated in the prison. The Danish actor Roland Møller was also incarcerated in the prison before he turned his life around and threw himself into acting with great success. The last beheading in Denmark also took place in the prison, it was 1892, when Jens Nielsen was beheaded in the prison yard. In 1949, Carl August Lorentzen escaped from prison, he spent 11 months digging an 18-meter-long tunnel, he was apprehended 7 days after the escape. Today, Horsens State Prison is a cultural institution, where in addition to being a museum, concerts, conferences, and fairs are also held. It is also possible to stay overnight at the hotel, which is located in part of the former prison.
