Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace is a 1999 fantasy film by George Lucas with Liam Neeson and Ewan McGregor. The first of three prequels tells the story of the first three famous Star Wars films from 1977 to 1983. In the Galactic Republic, a fierce dispute over trade rights has broken out between the Trade Federation, which is influenced by the Sith Lords, and the Republican Council of Jedi. The current crisis is the small planet Naboo, which is besieged by Federation battleships. Two Jedi Knights, Master Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson) and his apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor), are ordered to Naboo to intervene and mediate the conflict. The young Queen Amidala (Natalie Portman) feels compelled to negotiate a ceasefire with the invaders, but without giving up her authority - which quickly causes the negotiations to fail. To this end, Anakin embarks on a dangerous venture: he registers his participation in a so-called pod race, a dangerous, extremely brutal race that is held with jet-powered chariots. Qui-Gon, who has long since noticed the boy's extraordinary abilities, soon feels his suspicions that Anakin has the power within him confirmed. Using his powers, the boy emerges victorious from the pod race. The friends then escape to the planet Coruscant, where Qui-Gon tries to convince the Jedi Council to train Anakin as a Jedi. When the Council speaks out against it, Qui-Gon decides to take the boy's fate into his own hands.
