About :

A village without children is no village, they say. For 19 years there has been no school on Rigi, the queen of the mountains in central Switzerland. That is now changing. In the best of times, 36 children attended the comprehensive school in the village of Rigi-Kaltbad LU at around 1500 meters above sea level. Children were taught here as early as 1902. The Dahinden family, hoteliers, could fill a class with their group of ten children. At times there were even two schools on the excursion mountain divided by the two cantons of Lucerne and Schwyz. In recent years fewer and fewer parents have chosen to live on the mountain. And so there were only a few children who lived on Rigi all year round. The schools were closed. The remaining children had to go to school in the valley. Young parents who live and work on Rigi now want to change that. They have revived the "Rigi Children's Association", raised money, developed a concept with the help of a teacher advisor and employed a teacher. A classroom was not found, but the parents of the Rigi children knew what to do. One mother had already attended school on the Rigi: "Rigi school is freedom for me." Emily, Janosch, Moira and Linda are now a school class. Because no suitable and affordable space for a classroom could be found, teacher Jana Mummenthaler greeted the four children on their first day of school in a yurt on the meadow, surrounded by holiday homes. The toilet hut, for example, is located a few meters away. The school costs were financed with parental contributions and donations. The first school year is secured. "Of course, only a few pupils attend the Rigi school, but there are currently nine younger children living on the mountain who will also start school in the next few years," says the 25-year-old young teacher confidently. It is to be a nature school. She hopes that in the future children from the valley will also attend the extraordinary private school on the Rigi. Reporter Andrea Pfalzgraf accompanied this ambitious project for a year.
