About :

A punch changed the life of the young Roland Maag. He was knocked out of action after an FCZ game in Basel. He fought for his survival for 3 weeks. The season finale was about to be played in the 93rd minute when the Zurich team scored the decisive goal in Basel's St. Jakobspark. It was an unexpected victory for the Zurich team. Indescribable scenes then took place on and off the pitch. Scenes of violence that later went down in history under the title "The Shame of Basel". 👉For this video, the comment function is closed for once. At the same time, a mega party was taking place in Zurich. 28-year-old bodywork sheet metal worker Roland Maag and his colleagues were there. The party lasted until the early hours of the morning. As Roland is making his way home, he witnesses an argument. He tries to help mediate and ends up getting caught up in the fuss himself. Suddenly and for no reason, he is punched in the face. "Roli fell over like a tree trunk and hit the back of his head on the asphalt. Then it was quiet," remembers his companion Ronny. The perpetrator and his colleagues flee. It was only nine days later that the Zurich cantonal police caught the 23-year-old thug from the Zurich Oberland. He is a Swiss citizen with no apprenticeship and works as a sewer cleaner. Although he regrets the outcome of the argument, he does not feel guilty. Roland Maag fights for his life for three weeks at the Zurich University Hospital and has to be put into an artificial coma. His brain and nerves are critically injured. Mother and father fear for their only son. When Roland Maag is transferred to the rehabilitation clinic in Bellikon AG, his future prospects are devastating. He can neither walk nor talk and has to be fed artificially. The victim's lawyer assumes from the outset that the perpetrator accepted the risk of injuring his victim. The perpetrator's side merely speaks of negligent grievous bodily harm. A legal dispute erupts over this issue for years. It was not until six and a half years after the crime that the Federal Court made a final ruling: the perpetrator had aimed to injure his opponent with his punch and had been aware that serious bodily harm was easily possible. For this reason, the court imposed a four-year prison sentence. The perpetrator must spend this time in prison because he accepted the risk of injuring the victim. The film shows the far-reaching consequences that a single punch can have: for victims, perpetrators and their families. While Roland Maag has to undergo twelve operations and fights his way back to life bit by bit with tenacious willpower, the conflicting parties fight for justice in court. The court's verdict ultimately has a signal effect. "In future, massive blows to the head will no longer be considered a trivial matter, but a serious crime. A potential perpetrator must expect a severe punishment," says criminal law professor Christian Schwarzenegger.
