It was the first time in her life that she had seen such a small person who could barely fit in one hand. The latest technology keeps a premature baby alive and trained staff cares for them. But are there side effects for her later life? The premature baby Seraphina today Kathrin meets Seraphina again today and wants to know how she has developed and what a premature birth means for her parents and family. She also goes back to the Eastern Swiss Children's Hospital in St. Gallen, where Seraphina spent the first days of her life. In order to keep the side effects of a premature birth as low as possible, careful and sensitive care by doctors and nursing staff is essential in the first weeks of life. Kathrin visits the intensive care unit of Andre Birkenmaier, senior specialist, and Nicole Kaufmann, therapist, at the Eastern Swiss Children's Hospital again to find out what new findings there are in treatment and what new technical means and practical instructions will help children to lead a "normal" life in the future. How important are the last months in the womb? A child's brain develops very strongly in the last three months of pregnancy. During this phase, it needs the protection and peace in the womb. If it does not have this, it can develop abnormalities. Barbara Ritter, a neuropsychologist from the Eastern Swiss Children's Hospital, explains the connections. The future with the Concord Trolley With the latest technology, women will soon be able to keep their prematurely born child in the delivery room. The Concord Trolley is a new mobile intensive care unit that does not take the child far to the neo-intensive care unit, where it is cared for far away from the mother. In addition, the premature baby remains attached to the mother's umbilical cord during initial care for the first few minutes of its life. Senior specialist Andreas Malzacher has brought the new unit to the St. Gallen Cantonal Hospital. For him, it is clear: "Every meter that a premature baby has to walk is too much."
