About the author: Mustafa Lutfi bin Muhammad Lutfi bin Muhammad Hassan Lutfi is an Egyptian writer with a Turkish mother. He translated and adapted many famous French literary novels in a unique literary style and in an Arabic formulation of the utmost beauty and magnificence. He was not fluent in French, so he sought the help of a friend who translated the novels and then he formulated and polished them in a wonderful literary form. His two books, Al-Nazrat and Al-Ibarat, are considered among the most eloquent books written in Arabic in the modern era. Mustafa Lutfi Al-Manfaluti was born in Manfalut, one of the cities of Assiut Governorate, in 1289 AH corresponding to 1876 AD. He grew up in a noble home whose family inherited the position of Sharia judge and Sufi guild for nearly two hundred years. Al-Manfaluti followed the path of his fathers in culture and joined the village kuttab, as was the custom in the country at that time. He memorized the entire Holy Quran before he was eleven years old. His father then sent him to Al-Azhar in Cairo under the care of his comrades from his country. He had the opportunity to study under Sheikh Muhammad Abduh. After the death of his teacher, Al-Manfaluti returned to his country where he spent two years devoting himself to studying books of ancient literature. He read Ibn Al-Muqaffa, Al-Jahiz, Al-Mutanabbi and Abu Al-Ala Al-Maari and developed his own style based on his feelings and sensitivity. Al-Manfaluti is one of the writers whose method of composition had an impact on the present generation. He was inclined to read literary books a lot, and he stayed with Sheikh Muhammad Abduh and benefited from him. He was imprisoned for six months for a poem he wrote insulting Khedive Abbas Hilmi. He had a disagreement with Muhammad Abduh and published several articles in Al-Muayyad newspaper under the title Al-Nazrat. He held writing jobs in the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Justice, the Secretariat of the Legislative Assembly, and finally the Secretariat of the Parliament. Al-Manfaluti has many literary works that have been the subject of differing opinions and debates. Al-Manfaluti's works began to be revealed to people through what he published in some regional magazines such as Al-Falah, Al-Hilal, Al-Jami'a, Al-Omda, and others.
