For centuries, a minority - first Europe, then the USA - was able to determine the rules of the world's game. Now, not only Western values such as democracy and human rights are increasingly on the defensive, but also our economic system. China expert and journalist Frank Sieren sees a historical parallel in the current political world situation to the overcoming of the aristocratic society in the 19th century. At that time, the majority of citizens no longer wanted to let the aristocratic minority dictate the rules of the game. Likewise, today the majority of the world's population - especially China - refuses to continue to subordinate itself to Western hegemony on a global level. But how should Germany deal with an increasingly powerful China? On the one hand, the People's Republic is the most important trading partner after the USA, on the other hand, a values-based foreign policy requires that Beijing be confronted with human rights violations. Can one allow China to invest billions in domestic infrastructure and at the same time denounce the persecution of the Uighurs, the threats against Taiwan and the serious lack of the rule of law? However, unlike the West, China does not see itself in a battle between democracies and autocracies, but as an up-and-comer - and in competition with the established powers of the West, says Frank Sieren. For a country that has to provide for 1.4 billion people, other priorities apply than the protection of human rights. Since 2003 alone, the average per capita income of the Chinese has increased tenfold. The Chinese leadership is using rigorous means to ensure that this economic rise is not jeopardized by internal unrest. From the perspective of the West, the question has long been pressing: is communism actually on its head in China? There is actually maximum economic freedom and minimal political freedom. In other words, a reversal of the social conditions that the philosopher and economist Karl Marx once described as an ideal. What could a European post-growth society oppose to this pseudo-communist turbo-capitalism? Sieren warns: If the West does not manage to face up to the massive economic changes in the next few years and give China a legitimate place at the table of the powerful, it will face economic and political collapse. ----- Here on ZDFheute Nachrichten you can find out what is happening in the world and what concerns us all: We provide insight into the world of news, explain the background and address social debates.
