Ivar Buterfas-Frankenthal, born on January 16, 1933, grew up in Hamburg as the son of a Christian mother and a Jewish father. Shortly after starting school in 1938, Buterfas had to leave school because he was "half-Jewish." Buterfas' father was imprisoned in concentration camps, and his mother fled with her children in 1942. The family returned to Hamburg during the war under adventurous conditions. Here they survived the war and persecution in a basement. Ivar Buterfas-Frankenthal has made it his mission to tell young people about his life and the reign of terror of the National Socialists. Now 90 years old, Mr. Buterfas-Frankenthal came to Kiel on January 27, 2023, International Holocaust Remembrance Day. The event was held in cooperation between the Ministry of General and Vocational Education, Science, Research and Culture of the State of Schleswig-Holstein and the State Commissioner for Political Education.
