A History of Computing, From Its Beginnings to the Present Prof. Jayme Luiz Szwarcfiter (UFRJ and UERJ) Organized by PESC as a tribute to Jayme, who was awarded the ALIO 2024 medal by the Latin-Ibero-American Association of Operational Research. Jayme will be presented by Prof. Abilio Pereira de Lucena Filho October 9th (Wednesday), 11 am, Room H-324B Live broadcast on the PESC YouTube Channel Abstract: We present a historical overview of Computing, from its beginnings to the present day. The beginnings, in fact, go back to prehistory, while the present day corresponds to the present day. The history revolves around the central character of computing, which is undoubtedly the computer. We present the stages that science has gone through, up to its current development. A special emphasis is dedicated to the history of Brazilian computing. Short Bio: Jayme Luiz Szwarcfiter graduated in Electronic Engineering from the School of Engineering at UFRJ in 1967, completed his master's degree at COPPE, the Systems and Computer Engineering Program, in 1971, and his doctorate in Computer Science from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, England, in 1975. He completed postdoctoral studies at the University of California Berkeley, the University of Cambridge, England, and the Université de Paris-Sud (Orsay), France. He spent his entire academic career at UFRJ: Professor at the Institute of Mathematics in 1968, where he achieved the title of Professor Emeritus of the University. He has published several hundred papers in the areas of computer science and optimization. He has supervised several doctoral theses, the authors of which are currently prominent professors and researchers at universities in Brazil and abroad, notably in Argentina. A full member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, he has received several awards and distinctions, including the Álvaro Alberto Award from MCTI/CNPq, possibly one of the most important in the country in the scientific field. This year, he was honored by the Latin-Ibero-American Association of Operative Research with the ALIO Medal 2024.
